Nobody's Party PlatformComplete Political Reform based on the Principals of a- Fuller, Fairer, Freer, FRIENDLIER Democracy The most important task facing us this election year is to clarify and extend our vision of what real, honest political reform might might consist of, out further into our nation's awareness. Nobody in power apparently really wishes to do more than give reform lip service. Their support of much more than a cosmetic reform of our electoral and political system is nearly entirely lacking. The Oregon Committe to Re-Elect Nobody for President has taken as a starting point for their reform platform the following: Real electoral reform
as proposed by Ralph Nader
in the San Francisco Bay Guardian (circa November 2000)
- End legalized bribery and support publicly financed campaigns.
- Take back the airwaves and provide free time for ballot-qualified
candidates.
- Include everyone in elections by adopting same-day voter registration.
- Give voters the information they want by opening the presidential debates.
- Open up the two-party system by adopting proportional representation.
- Gauge public opinion at the polls by initiating a national non-binding
advisory referendum.
- Make every vote count by allowing instant runoff voting.
- When there is no one worth your vote, you should have a binding
- None-Of-The-Above option.
FULL PLAN In due course, we will elaborate further on this. ...More On Our Campaign Venture Getting People Who Don't Generally Don't Vote To VoteWe'd like to take this opportunity to clear up a misconception as to the nature of our campaign message. After 4 years of promoting Nobody for President on the net and in the capacity of a t-shirt vendor and a guerilla-infowar-provacateur at public events, I (Not we. I know how to switch between using "me" and the editorial, or for that matter the group "we".) have noticed that altogether too many people either confuse or miss many of the main points that Nobody is attempting to make. For instance, saying "Nobody is telling you (not) to vote". So what's the message there? Tricky isn't it? In language studies this is called a double negative and its not exactly easy to handle them well at all points. So what's the message? Don't vote? Not even close. But many people think that is what we are advocating, when its precisely the opposite. Look at it this way. Are we trying to say- Nobody Vote or...Vote Nobody? Not voting is actually a form of voting. Call it negative voting. It certainly has all the impact, in a negative sense as casting a vote. It is essentially a "no confidence" vote in our system of governance. I can't say I blame AnyBody for lack of confidence in our political system as it is presently operated. (read manipulated) Our present system is rigged from side to side and top to bottom and stacked heavily in favor of the very rich and the already powerful. Virtually every single law and institution involved in our political process wherein we choose our elected leaders who write and pass our laws that govern US, are in need of reform. Its true, the vote and the process of how who we get to vote for is subverted. But I personally don't feel like throwing away my little slice of power either. (As long as a man like Howard Dean will against all odds, get up and run for this nation's highest office, I'LL VOTE.). However I don't feel like wasting it on another lieing, thieving, on bought off, sold out politician. (read Bush or Kerry, but a little more on that later.) In short, I believe that the vote is probably the only way the mess the vote is in can ever be corrected. I believe we ALL, aka EVERYBODY, should vote. If we did, this country would almost certainly not be in quite thew mess its in today. Really there's no mystery at all why the USA has such an extremely high "political drop-out average". It a shameful thing to see in a democracy. But there it is. Right on 50% of our citizens consistently don't bother to vote in any election. Why? Why such wide spread nonparticipation and apathy in something as important as electing the representatives that make such important decisions that effect EveryBody's lives? Could it be that people don't feel all that represented? There's no mystery there. We are not very well represented by our elected representatives today. Its the same old song that has been going on a long time in the corridors of power. When big money greed and corruption so obviously rule, us nobodys don't have a lot of say in anything. Of course regular people are left out. Well, Nobody can change that. Right? And Nobody will. Nobody can represent Everybody's interests in Washington DC. So VOTE NOBODY. In such a sorry state of affairs, going to the polls and writing in Nobody could be considered a positive develoment. With that said, our campaign is aimed at getting that at least a small portion of the 50% drop-outs thinking, revitalized and voting. When they decide that voting is really worth it, America will change for the better and not before then. We among others don't think there's much time to do this in. There is obvious movement afoot to scrap our republic in favor of Empire building. Big mistake. Our stategy, however "hippie looking", unlikley & unorthodox, are sincere. And who knows, it might even help. At this point when all bets are off, who's to say? For a few recent examples of how real (?) politicians relate to the vote: George Bush can't get em out to vote. Dubyah doesn't want them out to vote except the "party faithful". He'd just as soon see only Republicans voting and voting for him of course. The fact is that the Republicans are straining at their base. What they have going for them is more discpline in gettinmg their members out to vote. But they are straining at the limits of how many votes they can muster. Most of the non-voters out there would probably vote Democrat if they bothered to vote at all. Dr. Dean, God bless him, can't seem to bring in the vote either. Can Kerry? Doubtful. Bill Clinton got elected on a slim to non-existant majority of the electorate. Nobody has a mandate. The truth is most people didn't vote. Its been this bad for awhile now here in the USA. So who can bring in the FULL VOTE in America? Why Nobody can! To bring in a Full Vote will take a Full Plan. And of course Nader isn't doing it yet either. We are happy to see a lot of people studying the problem and working incessantly to do something about it. American Democracy is well worth saving, if for no other reason than the alternative is absolutely unacceptable. If you wish to see how we feel that this just might be accomplished, our website provides a modest contribution to this ongoing endeavor. Read a bit aye. Check out EveryBody's Links page that have some very good connectors to lots of other people who are working on assessing and then correcting...no let's call it what it is, healing our worn, torn and wounded, body politic. |
